NOTHING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING
2015
Video installation with sound
Variable dimensions / Loop 29’11”
Video installation that results from a series of workshops carried along the year of 2015 with 16 patients of the Psychiatric Institute of Rio de Janeiro Federal University (UFRJ) that constitute the group A Voz dos Usuários. Inspired in collective readings of short stories written by Swiss author Robert Walser (1878-1956), who has also passed by several psychiatric internments between 1929 and 1956, the participants wrote and recorded in video their own reflections about mind reason and madness in daily life.
Some months ago I had lots and lots of problems. Heavy problems, many problems. And I spoke to God – I have a lot of faith. I am a woman of faith. I speak right to God. I have a good relationship with Him – so I’d say: “God, what shall I do?” I spent days, months, asking Him: “What shall I do?”... Until the day he said back to me what I had to do: “Dalila, you have to do the hardest thing to be done: you have to do nothing, absolutely nothing.”

THE PROCESS
NOTHING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING
Departing from the short stories by Swiss author Robert Walser (1878-1956), who has also passed by several psychiatric internments between 1929 and 1956, and whose work became a definite influence in contemporary literature in German language, the participants rewrote their doubts and impressions about life, beauty, the share of reason and madness in each one's daily life... where the voices in our minds are dissonant but real, though disconnected from the arbitrary and unashamedly simplistic reality. Our history does not satisfy us, but our voices can only continue it in an almost monotonous silence, which only literature comes sometimes to disturb. There is nothing that divides us, since there is also nothing that gathers us. We are all similar, even though so different, and, in this insane challenge to make ourselves different, we go through our ephemeral existences. Let us hear other voices in all of us.
