COCOON
2019
Video installation (single-channel with audio, 4K)
Recipient of the ZUM Photography Prize, Institute Moreira Salles
Variable dimensions / Loop 33’47”
Participative project and video done with a group of 15 patients at the Institut of Psychiatry of The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, with focus on the perception and the routine after hospitalisation, Cocoon tries to make visible the territory assigned to madness, its displacement from the hospital environment to other spaces in society. The metaphor of the cocoon is chosen to approach the issue of psychiatric closure as a territory whose temporality and spatiality cannot be generalized or previously defined, a territory that only exists if in a constant state of transformation.
We are prisoners of the cocoon, but mostly we are prisoners of our perception of the cocoon. The cocoon sets limits. We are prisoners of our sensibility, which is the borderline of everything. Our sensibility always expands and the cocoon is bound to be broken.
