These works were developed from the meeting of two contexts. The book “Wahrhaftige Historia”, by Hans Staden (1557), serves as a script for capturing images from the universe of the funk ball in Rio. When juxtaposed, these two contexts – separated by 450 years – allow a critical re-reading of history (of perception), revealing mechanisms of cultural domination and perpetuation of the European imagination of the wild tropics (The imagined paradise of the New World), as well as the establishment of certain culturally in force policies that legitimized the genocide of Brazilian Indians and the usurpation as a governmental methodology during the colonization of the American continent.
Five of the original woodcuts from chapter XXIX of Hans Staden's book, those that narrate details of the preparation of an anthropophagic banquet, were allegorically reconstructed with funkeiros and photographed on a slab barbecue on the top of Santa Marta hill, in Rio de Janeiro, forming a series of five analog photographs, dubbed Woodcuts.

Dias & Riedweg invited a group of Funk dancers in Rio de Janeiro to re-enact five of the original woodcuts from hans Staden’s book as contemporary tableaux-vivants ‘Funk-style’. The result is a comparison between the 16th-century view of early interactions between Europeans and New World people and the establishment with the culture of favela Funk music nowadays.
